Monthly Schedule

(STAtistics, Period D)

W 4/1/09

Career Day (no class).

Th 4/2/09

HW due: Read pp. 711-715; write #13.12 with all PHASTPC steps, including the sketch of the  sampling distribution. To get you started, I will do the PHA steps for you, and you may feel free to copy them without penalty.

Let p1 = true probability of obtaining a doll
      p2 =     "           "            "         "        a candy bar
      p3 =     "           "            "         "        a free ride
      p4 =     "           "            "         "        nothing

H0: p1 = p2 = p3 = p4 = .25
Ha: Not all probabilities are as claimed.

Assumptions for  g.o.f. test:

  • SRS (can assume trials are equiv. to an SRS of all possible random draws)
  • All exp. counts  1? Yes, since all exp. counts are 500(.25) = 125 > > 1
  • No more than 25% of exp. counts < 5? Yes, since all are 125 > > 5

[Note: The alternative hypothesis can also be phrased as, “At least one of the probabilities is not .25.” It is not correct to say that all of the probabilities differ from .25, nor is it correct to say, “All the probabilities are not as claimed.” The position of the word “not” is critical! Learn the correct wording as shown above.]

F 4/3/09

HW due: Read pp. 717-728; write #13.15. Earlier assignments may also be collected or scanned a second time.

M 4/6/09

HW due: Read pp. 730-735 and summaries on pp. 737-738 and pp. 740-742; write #13.32abc, #13.34abc. In #13.34c, use STAT TESTS C (-test) first, then CSDELUXE to see which program handles domain errors better. Report your findings as requested.

T 4/7/09

No additional HW due. Assemble at 10:45 for roll call; we will then quickly vote on one of two activities for the day.

W 4/8/09

HW due: Read pp. 753-757 (read all the way to the bottom of p. 757) and pp. 762-767.

Additional HW due for the 5 students who did not attend the program at Hearst Hall yesterday: Write up a short report on the statistics you gathered at the catapult competition. Show tables, including (hopefully) a few 2-way tables.

If you have time and wish to complete the textbook reading for the year, you may also read pp. 774-781. Then you will be finished with the textbook!

Note: We are omitting most of §14.1 (pp. 758-760) and all of §14.2 (pp. 769-772).

Th 4/9/09

HW due: Read pp. 774-781; write #13.26, #14.18abcd.

F 4/10/09

HW due: Write #14.15abcd, #14.20. The golf data and figures referred to in #14.20 are found on pp. 766-767.

Important: Be sure to leave the golf data in your calculator so that we can work with it in class. I will do a quick check to make sure that you have round 1 data in L1 and round 2 data in L2.

M 4/13/09

HW due: Write up the golf problem (#14.20) as a PHASTPC one-tailed test. Include a sketch of the sampling distribution of the t statistic.

T 4/14/09

HW due: #13.9, #13.10, #13.23, #13.24, #14.9, #14.14.

In class: Review.

W 4/15/09

Test (100 pts.) on chi-square and LSRL t procedures.

Th 4/16/09

HW due: Under time pressure (approx. 40 minutes max.), re-do questions #1-16 from yesterday’s test. Neatness counts.

F 4/17/09

HW due: As I stated in class yesterday, your test corrections will probably be collected a second time. Do not copy or “borrow” answers from other students. Instead, argue with them, advocating the correctness of your position. Whether you fail or prevail, you will learn from the experience. Emotional involvement is the key. Remember, we can generally transfer to long-term memory only those facts or experiences with which we have some sort of emotional connection.

M 4/20/09

Diversity Day (no class). Only A and B periods will have a normal class today.

T 4/21/09

HW due: Re-do your entire test from last week (all 17 questions). If you wish, you may make alterations and additions (such as #17) to your corrections from last week, but you may not simply mark up your graded test. Put all work either on a printed-out copy of the test or on a sheet of notebook paper. The typo in #6 has been corrected, and you are expected to answer it correctly now. Neatness counts, and 100% accuracy on all problems is expected. This homework assignment will probably be scored at double or triple credit.

In class: AP-style review. There may also be a quiz on the formula sheet markup guide. If you took good notes at the end of class last Friday, you already have all the information you need to succeed on the quiz.

W 4/22/09

Test (100 pts.) on all material for the year.

Th 4/23/09

No written HW due. Be prepared for a quiz on the formula sheet markup guide. All material on the markup guide is fair game, not merely the portions that we discussed in class last Friday.

F 4/24/09

Discussion of research findings presented at the NCTM convention; another quiz.

M 4/27/09

No school (Phi Beta Kappa Day).

T 4/28/09

HW due: Provide written, organized evidence of AP review using your AP review book. This applies regardless of whether or not you are planning to take the AP exam. Scribbles in the margins of your book do not count for credit. You must have actual written evidence (e.g., worked problems, graded and compared against the solutions given in the book) to show that you have been reviewing.

Anyone who does not have this assignment will receive a note, to be carried home, which says, “Dear Mom and Dad: Since I have not been reviewing for my AP exam, I have decided not to take it. I hope you understand, but the alternative, namely taking an exam for which I am not prepared, makes even less sense. Of course, I will probably also not earn a very good score on Wednesday’s test either. I thought you would want to be mentally prepared for that. Love, Your Son.”

W 4/29/09

Test (100 pts.) using AP multiple-choice format and timing. There will be 22 questions in 50 minutes. Scoring is 4 points for a correct answer, 0 points for an omission, and –1 point for a wrong answer. There is no partial credit. All material from the year is fair game. If you miss this test for any reason, the make-up is Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. Since we have 4 tests this quarter, your lowest score will be dropped.

Th 4/30/09

HW due: Answer all 22 of the questions from yesterday’s test. This assignment will be collected before the test begins. People who were absent from yesterday’s test should check their mailbox for the questions and a bubble sheet.

Test (100 pts.) using AP free-response format and timing.
There will be two “short” questions and one “long” question of the type shown in your AP review book. All material from the year is fair game. If you miss this test for any reason, the make-up is Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. Since we have 4 tests this quarter, your lowest score will be dropped.
