Monthly Schedule

(Geometry, Periods A and F)

W 9/3/08

First day of school.

Th 9/4/08

HW due:

1. Send Mr. Hansen a signed e-mail message, using the e-mail address that you will check most frequently during the year. This will be our supplementary communication channel. Important: Begin your subject line with two underscore characters (__) and your period (A or F) so that I can identify it easily. If you are in A period, your subject line should begin with __A, and if you are in F period, your subject line should begin with __F.

2. Read §1.1 (required). Then, if you wish, work a selection of problems at the end of the section. This would be an opportunity for you to practice doing written work with no penalty. I will be happy to look at your work and assess how it would be scored on a scale of 0 to 4 points. Please read the HW guidelines.

3. Since there is a reading assignment, written notes on the reading would normally be required. However, since we are just getting started, you may omit the reading notes this time.

F 9/5/08

HW due: Read §1.2 (reading notes required); write §1.1 #5-13 all. Be sure to follow the HW guidelines.

M 9/8/08

HW due: Read §1.3 (reading notes required, as always!); write §1.2 #1, 5, 8, 9, 11, 14, 16, 17, 20.

T 9/9/08

HW due: Read §1.4; write §1.3 #1, 3, 7, 8, and write the following spelling words in your notebook.

collinear, theorem, parallelogram, trapezoid, rhombus, perpendicular, isosceles

(Write each word at least once, and then repeat as many times as you need in order to learn its spelling.)

W 9/10/08

In class: Mini Practice Test 1 (ungraded).

HW due: Read §1.5; write §1.4 #3-6 all, 14. You should follow the exact format presented below for #3, and you may copy my work if you wish. Important: You must write the “Given” and “Prove” statements, as well as the diagram. Abbreviations are permitted. I permit the use of the letter “G” for “given.” Remember to write “Q.E.D.” or the Halmos sign at the end.

3.

Given:   is a rt.

Prove:

(Q.E.D.)

Th 9/11/08

HW due: Read §§1.6 and 1.7; write §1.5 #2, 4, 6, 11, 18, 20.

F 9/12/08

HW due: Read §1.8; skim §1.9 (should be a review from previous classes); write §1.6 #8, 10, §1.7 #5, 7, 10, 14.

In class: Mini practice test 2. A thorough solution key is now available as well.

M 9/15/08

HW due: Write §1.8 #2, 4, 5, 9; write §1.9 #1-5 all, 12.

You should also do a selection of review problems from pp. 54-59 #1-39 all. Choose problems that are challenging for you! Tomorrow’s test will be primarily drawn from problems similar to these 39 review problems.

In class: review.

T 9/16/08

Test #1 (100 points). Geometry is a cumulative subject, in which each topic builds upon those that went before. Therefore, all tests are cumulative, and you are expected to be familiar with all important concepts and techniques learned during the entire year. The material to be emphasized will be announced before each test. Test numbers (#1, #2, etc.) do not necessarily correspond to chapter numbers in the textbook.

W 9/17/08

HW due: Work through as many of the algebra drill and practice quizzes as you can. Keep a time log and a record of how many you got correct on each quiz; this will serve as your written homework evidence. You do not need to make printouts of the quiz report sheets; that was intended only for people who had to do summer work. You may skip over topics that are too easy. (You will know after answering a few questions if the topic is too easy for you.)

In class: Computer-based quiz on 1 or 2 of the topics.

Th 9/18/08

HW due: Read §§2.1 and 2.2; continue working on the algebra drill and practice quizzes if you have not already finished all of them.

Additional required problem for “A” period students:

Solve for y if a right angle is given to have measure of 5y2 + 15y.

F 9/19/08

HW due: Read §2.3; write §2.1 #2, 8, 9, §2.2 #10, 11, 17.

M 9/22/08

HW due: Read §2.4; write §2.3 #5, 6, 13, 14, §2.4 #1-7 all.

T 9/23/08

HW due: Read §2.5; write §2.4 #8, 10, 12, 15, 17, 21. Do not do any problems in §2.5 just yet.

W 9/24/08

HW due: Read §2.6; write §2.5 #4, 5, 6, 14, §2.6 #3, 4, 10, 14, 15.

Th 9/25/08

HW due: Read §§2.7 and 2.8; write §2.7 #4, 7, 8, 9, 14, 18, §2.8 #4, 7, 8, 10, 11.

In class: We will work on Sketchpad Lab I during class.

Sometime today, please check your solution to §2.5 #14 against my version (presented during F period yesterday).

F 9/26/08

The long-postponed Quiz on randomly chosen selections from the interactive drill and practice topics will probably finally occur today.

HW due: Check the problems due yesterday (9/25) and one fairly difficult algebra problem due Wednesday (9/24). Please make corrections as needed. No other written work is due for students who attended the Political Roundtable at the Cathedral yesterday evening. If for some reason you were unable to attend, then the following problems are due today: §2.8 #9, 12, 14.

M 9/29/08

HW due: Review problems #1-38 most, pp. 105-109. By this, I mean that you should do most of them. You may omit a few of the easier ones if you are certain they are a waste of your time. Solutions have now been posted for reference in the HW store. WARNING: Do not look at the solutions until after you have tried the problems yourself, in writing, preferably under time pressure. Otherwise, you are not getting a proper review for the test.

In class: Review.

T 9/30/08

Test #2.
