Methodology for Randomizing the Project Groups
[rev. 10/10/2006]

1.

We will include all 15 members of the class.

2.

We will choose both group members and leaders in this exercise.

3.

Table B will be our technique of choice for randomly choosing group members and leaders.

4.

Use Mr. Hansen’s TI-83 to select a starting row with randInt(101,150). Warning: On the AP exam, you cannot use calculator notation. You would simply say something like, “Start at the left edge of row 118 of Table B.”

4a.

It is understood that Table B continues left to right, top to bottom, returning to the upper left corner if necessary. We must never repeat previously used portions of Table B during this exercise.

5.

Assign 2-digit numbers 00-14 to the students from the alphabetic roster.

6.

Make a table, 3 rows (labeled “Other 1,” “Other 2,” and “Leader”) by 5 columns (labeled “Group 1” through “Group 5”).

7.

Draw 2-digit numbers from Table B in sequence. (Important: Ignore 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99.) The remainder when the selected number is divided by 15 indicates the person who will be slotted next into the table.

Note: If the remainder arithmetic is confusing, you might prefer to say that you will draw 2-digit numbers from Table B in sequence, ignoring 15-99. That is certainly simpler. However, that also means that most of your digit pairs will be discarded, and filling the table will take much longer.

8.

We will fill the student table left to right, then top to bottom.

There is at least one gap remaining in these instructions. Can you find it? Write out your answer with the appropriate number(s).
