Monthly Schedule

(Honors AP Calculus BC, Period A)

T 5/1/07

AP review (day 3 of 5). Your AP Review Log may be scanned.

Quiz (10 pts.) on derivatives of functions and inverses presented in tabular format.

W 5/2/07

Practice AP Exam IA: Please arrive by 7:45 a.m. so that we can start at 7:50 sharp. (If you arrive a few minutes later coming quietly from McDonald’s, that is acceptable, but you must finish by 8:45 with everyone else. The last 5 minutes of the period are for scoring so that you can see how well you did.) Format is 28 multiple-choice questions without calc. in 55 minutes. Your score for today will be an AP-style curved score based on 70 possible points. Since normally a score of about 65% qualifies as a top AP score, almost everyone should earn an A today. If you are sick today, tomorrow, or Friday, you must take the test instrument under time pressure over the weekend, with your parents serving as proctors. If you miss class today for a preplanned reason (e.g., doctor’s appointment, college trip), you will earn a zero, which will be included in your average and cannot be dropped.

During the test, your AP Review Log may be scanned.

The answer key is as follows. Please see me in Math Lab (or talk with your climbing buddy) if you have trouble matching any of these answers.

How to interpret your score: Take your raw score (out of 112) and convert to a percentage. Add 25 for the curve, and then multiply by .7 since the test is a maximum of 70 points instead of 100. The 5-point bonus is being recorded separately, since some students will be dropping this test.

Example: Bill Bulldog scores 56/112 (50%). The curved score is 75% (C+), which is 52.5 points out of 70. If this test is not dropped, its effect would be 57.5/70, which is a low B. If the test is dropped, the 5-point bonus can be thought of as being added to Exam IB.

Th 5/3/07

Practice AP Exam IB starting at 8:00 a.m. Format is 17 multiple-choice questions with calc. in 50 minutes. Scoring is the same as on 5/2.

During the test, your AP Review Log may be scanned.

The answer key is as follows. Make sure that you have gained a complete understanding of all 45 multiple-choice questions (28 from yesterday, 17 from today).

Page 3: EB
Page 4: ECDBBDD

Scoring is the same as yesterday, except that the denominator is 68 instead of 112. The same scaling to 70 points applies.

F 5/4/07

Practice AP Exam IIA and IIB (shortened) starting at 7:40 a.m. Scoring is the same as on 5/2. On the real AP exam, you would have 3 free-response questions with calc. in 45 minutes, followed by 3 more free-response questions without calc. in 45 minutes. Because of time constraints, we will have only 2 in each category. During the without-calc. portion, you may continue to work on the problems from the with-calc. portion if you wish, though of course any parts that require the calculator must be finished by then.

During the test, your AP Review Log may be scanned.

Note:
If you take all 3 tests at the scheduled times, then your lowest score of the 3 will be dropped.
If you miss any single test for an emergency (e.g., illness, funeral), then the zero on that test will be dropped, but the other 2 will count, provided you show evidence that your parents proctored the replacement practice test. (If not, the zero will be averaged with your better test to make a double score.)
If you miss 2 tests for emergency reasons, then the test that you did take will count double, provided you show evidence that your parents proctored both replacement practice tests. (If not, then each test not taken will count as a zero.)
If you miss all 3 tests for emergency reasons, then you must take a make-up test for double credit and provide evidence that your parents proctored all 3 replacement practice tests. (If not, then each test not taken will count as a zero.)

M 5/7/07

AP review (day 4 of 5). Your AP Review Log may be scanned.

Attendance Rules for AP Weeks (May 7-11 and May 14-18)

Unless otherwise posted on this Web page, class will be held each day at the normal time, and attendance will be taken. You are automatically excused if you have a morning AP exam and if you actually attend the exam. (If you fail to attend an exam for which you are scheduled, you will be charged with a cut if you have any remaining, otherwise a point penalty of 1 point per minute of class missed.)

Note: If you have an afternoon exam and wish to be excused from HappyCal class, you must submit a written request in advance (e-mail preferred). I will normally approve such requests, but approval is not automatic. You must make the request yourself.
