Quest on Hypothesis Testing (50 points)

Today’s format is as follows:

Problems 1-3: 6 points each, 7 minutes total
Problem 4 and 5: 16 points each, 13 minutes each (AP style)
Total: 50 points, 33 minutes

Extended time will last the full period, 50 minutes. Today, however, all students may use extended time if necessary. Try to finish within the 33-minute limit, since that is how fast you will have to be when you take the AP exam.

When you have finished, please hand in your paper to Dr. Schofer and work quietly on your assignment for tomorrow. Your assignment is to finish reading the textbook (material on inference for linear regression) and to work any 2 problems of your choice on LSRL inference, showing your work.

1.

Carefully define what a P-value is, in terms of a conditional probability.

P-value = P(obtaining a test statistic as extreme as, or more extreme than, the one seen | H0 is true)

2.

Give at least three examples of questions you should always ask when hearing or reading a statistic for the first time.

Who says so? How does s/he know? Is something missing? Did someone change the subject? Does it make sense?

3.

Define what is meant by statistical significance. (Note: Do not say that statistical significance equals the P-value. The P-value measures the strength of the statistical significance, but the P-value is not synonymous with the general concept of statistical significance.)

A difference is statistically significant if it cannot plausibly be explained by chance alone.

Use full procedures (fill in the 7 letters here for a bonus point: ____PHA(S)TPC___________ ) as you answer the AP-style free response questions on the pages that follow. Note that answer sheets with huge empty areas are provided for you to write your answers. If you need additional room, write the word “OVER” in large letters and use the reverse side.
