Monthly Schedule

(AP Statistics, Period B)

M 5/1/06

HW due: In your AP review book, tear out p. 365 or make a photocopy of it. Use this bubble sheet to record your answers and scratch work as you do as many problems on pp. 367-375 as you can in 90 minutes. If you need more scratch sheets, use them and save them as evidence of your work. I regret that a filled-out bubble sheet with no scratch work will not qualify for credit. And yes, I know that this is more than the usual 35 minutes, but that’s just the way it is. If you manage to finish in fewer than 90 minutes, record that fact on your time log. Note: I recommend working more than one of the practice exams, but the multiple choice portion of the first one is all that is required for full credit.

In class: AP review (day 6 of 7).

T 5/2/06

No additional HW due today. In class: AP review (day 7 of 7). Class will be held today and is required for everyone who does not have a morning AP exam. Cuts are permitted, however.

AP Examination, Trapier Theater, 12:45 p.m.

Bring: calculator, spare batteries, several pencils, and a pen (for signing your name).

Optional: straightedge.

Leave in your car: scratch paper and cell phone. Cell phones are completely banned.

W 5/3/06

The Must-Pass Quiz continues today. Nobody has passed yet, but the updated tote board shows several students within striking distance. The cumulative sample proportion of correct answers is currently 68.1% (about 90.6 correct responses out of 133 attempts), which is a little below where it needs to be if people want to pass on the first or second try.

Th 5/4/06

NSA Field Trip 8:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (normal dress code) for the following students:

Ben, Christian, Clay, Jeffrey, Kenny, Will.

Meet at the bus behind the Martin Gym (on the service road, near the gate). Bus will depart at 8:05 sharp. I will have some minor snacks (soda and cookies), but bring money if you wish to purchase something more from the vending machines at the museum.

Students not on the field trip must complete the following three-part assignment:

1. Visit this site and read the entire page. Read the sections entitled “What is YFCY?” and “How Colleges Use YFCY” in detail, because you will need to know the purpose of the survey in order to answer #3 below. You may read the rest of the page in a more cursory fashion. Make a few brief reading notes.

2. In the green section near the top of the page you visited in #1, click to see a sample copy of the 2006 YFCY Survey Instrument. How many pages long is the instrument? (Write the answer on your HW paper.)

3. On a sheet of paper in standard homework format, provide a critique of the survey instrument. What is good about it? What, in your opinion, could be improved? Spend approximately 45 minutes on this assignment, and keep a time log. I encourage you to discuss ideas with classmates, but no direct copying is permitted.

F 5/5/06

HW due: Three-part assignment (see yesterday’s calendar entry) for those who were not on the field trip.

In class: The Must-Pass Quiz continues.

M 5/8/06

The Must-Pass Quiz continues. One student that we thought had passed on Friday still needs to answer one more question, since he was on round 2. This was my oversight. (In round 2, the requirement is 9 out of 11 correct, not 8 out of 10.)

T 5/9/06

Ditto.

W 5/10/06

Ditto.

1. Visit this site and read the entire page. Read the sections entitled “What is YFCY?” and “How Colleges Use YFCY” in detail, because you will need to know the purpose of the survey in order to answer #3 below.
