Monthly Schedule

(AP Statistics, Period B)

W 9/8/04

First day of class.

Th 9/9/04

HW due: Read pp. xii-xvii, 2-7. Reading notes are required (follow HW guidelines—see link). There will also be a short Quiz to test your knowledge of the alphabet, the attendance policies, and the reading assignment.

F 9/10/04

HW due: Continue reading through p.24. Reading notes are required, as always. (After today I will probably not give a reminder.)

M 9/13/04

HW due: Finish reading §1.1 (through p.34); write #1.27, 1.28 on p.35.

Remember that the Technology Toolbox exercises (e.g., pp. 21-22) and examples (e.g., pp. 28-30) are part of your reading. Always do your reading with calculator, notebook, and pencil at the ready. Textbook reading is not “casual reading” that you can do while riding on the Metro or watching television.

AP classes are designed to be similar to college classes, and just as in a real college class, I expect you to be thoroughly familiar with whatever is in the textbook, even though we will seldom have sufficient time to cover every detail in class.

T 9/14/04

HW due: Read through p.47; write #1.36, 1.39. In #1.36(a), make a back-to-back stemplot as well as the boxplots that are requested.

W 9/15/04

HW due: Read through the end of Chapter 1, and write group proposal (approx. ˝ page) for your exploratory data analysis project. The proposal should describe

§         What you are interested in researching

§         What you speculate you will discover

§         How you will gather the data

§         What types of charts and graphs you intend to use. (Please remember that we have a new tool in our arsenal, namely the NQP, which we learned about yesterday.)

At least 50 data points are required, and for a good project, more than one variable will probably be needed. On all group work, please list all group members’ names, and underline the name of the group leader.

Group 1: David P., Sam, Tim
Group 2: David C., Martin B., Pan
Group 3: Ricky, Nick, Martin M.

Th 9/16/04

HW due: #1.64, 1.66, 1.69.

F 9/17/04

Quiz on Chapter 1. Although this will be a short quiz, everything in the text as well as everything discussed in class up to this point will be considered fair game. I recommend reviewing your class notes.

HW due: Prepare a timeline for your group project. You may also revise your proposal if you wish.

M 9/20/04

HW due: Read through p.84 and this article from the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association; write #2.3, 2.4.

Optional HW: Read the editorial written by the ICMJE regarding advance registration of medical research studies.

Also today: Pop Quiz on recent reading.

T 9/21/04

HW due: Continue reading in Chapter 2; perform and write #2.18. Your goal by today should be to read through the middle of p.94, including reading notes. Remember, examples (e.g., Example 2.3 on p. 87) are always part of your assignment.

W 9/22/04

HW due: Read through p.103; write #2.21-2.24 all.

Th 9/23/04

HW due: Read through p.112, plus Technology Toolboxes on pp.115-117; begin working on #1.29, 1.45, 1.46, 1.52, and 2.38-2.51 all. Note: For #1.52, make 3 types of graphs (you may use a spreadsheet graphing utility such as Microsoft Excel if you wish):

1.         Paired bar graph. (Excel refers to this as a “clustered column chart.”)

2.         Paired relative frequency bar graph. (This is the same as #1, except using percentages instead of numbers. Compute percentages relative to each age group’s total. Excel does not do this for you automatically; you will actually have to do a little bit of work.)

3.         Stacked paired relative frequency graph. (Excel calls this a “100% stacked column chart.”)

F 9/24/04

No class today. If you need help, please visit my office.

HW due:
Continue working on the written HW that was assigned previously.

M 9/27/04

HW due: Hand in the written HW that was previously assigned. If you are absent today for any reason, you should contact me to deliver your HW, since you have had 5 days to work on it. You can send your assignment to the school’s fax machine at (202) 537-5613.

In class: Pop quiz on Chapter 2.

T 9/28/04

Quiz and review.

W 9/29/04

Senior retreat (no class).

Th 9/30/04

Test on Chapters 1 and 2. As you study, you may wish to check answers to recent review problems.
