Monthly Schedule

(Geometry, Periods E and F)

F 10/1/04

Room R, before school (7:00 a.m. sharp): Optional re-take of Chapter 1 test. If your re-take is higher than your original score, then the two will be averaged. If your re-take is lower, there will be no penalty. The re-take will be similar in length and difficulty to the original version, but the questions may be different and may cover different material. As before, the test will be based on material covered in the textbook, material discussed in class, the review problems that were assigned, and the practice test.

Please send me an e-mail if you desire the solutions to the practice test. So far, only 4 students have done so . . . which probably explains the low scores on the 9/27 test.

No additional HW is due today. The people who are taking the re-test have their work cut out for them already.

In class: Continuation of Jeopardy Bingo from last Friday. Finalists in E period are Barrett, Matt, Willie, and one more student to be determined; finalists in F period are Matt, Foster, and two more students to be determined.

Results: Nick won in F period, and Jack won a runner-up prize. E period will conclude on Monday.

M 10/4/04

HW due: Read §2.5; write §2.4 #10 for collection, §2.5 #1, 2.

T 10/5/04

No additional HW due today. (Actually, there was an assignment made in class, but our agreement is that you are not required to do the assignment if I fail to post the assignment on this Web site in a timely fashion.)

W 10/6/04

HW due: Read §2.6; write §2.6 #1-4 all. Read §2.7; write §2.7 #4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 14.

If you wish to take tomorrow’s construction quiz for practice, you may do so today. If you are happy with your score, you can be excused early from class tomorrow.

Th 10/7/04

Construction Quiz (at end of class): You will be given a random triangle. Your task will be to construct the circumscribed circle and the centroid of the triangle. Time limit: 4 minutes (6 for extended time). Practice at home to be sure you can do this in the time provided.

HW due:
Read §2.8; write §2.8 #1-13 all.

F 10/8/04

No school.

M 10/11/04

Columbus Day (no school).

T 10/12/04

HW due: Review problem #30, p.108, plus as many of the odd-numbered review problems as time permits. Choose ones that are challenging for you so that you can prepare for your test. Keep a written record of everything that you do (no “oral only” answers). However, for the easier problems, you may shorten your work somewhat so that you can cover more problems. Your HW check will consist of a quick scan to verify that you have done at least 35 minutes’ worth of work. However, if you hope to do well on Wednesday’s test, you will certainly want to spend more time than that.

W 10/13/04

Test on Chapter 2. Because the practice test did not seem to be particularly helpful last time (only 5 students requested the solution key), I am not offering a practice test this time.

Th 10/14/04

HW due: Read §3.1; write §3.1 #1-3 all, plus the 2-column proof that was handed out. For people who were absent or who lost the handout sheet, here is the proof problem:

Given: ray TM bisects ÐOTX
Prove:
Ð1 @ Ð2

Proof (2-column format):

F 10/15/04

HW due: Read §3.2 and the Notes and Hints for §3.2.

However, there will be no class today for either E period or F period. Enjoy your day of rest!

M 10/18/04

HW due: If you have not already done so, read §3.2 and the Notes and Hints for §3.2. Then, write §3.2 #1-6 all plus #10, and prepare #11-16 orally. Several of these have been done for you as examples, and you can copy the solutions into your notebook without penalty. (You are still required to do them, however.)

T 10/19/04

HW due: Read §3.3 and 3.4; write §3.3 #9, 11, 13; write §3.4 #1, 4, 6, 10.

W 10/20/04

HW due: Read §3.5; write §3.4 #14 or 15 (your choice); write §3.5 #3-7 all.

Th 10/21/04

HW due: Read §§3.6 and 3.7; patch up your §3.5 problems from yesterday, and write §3.6 #2, 3, 7, 10 (sloppy sketches OK).

F 10/22/04

Both classes (E and F) will meet in Steuart 202 today.

HW due:
Write §3.7 #2, 5, 7, 8, 14. If we are staying on schedule, we will allocate a portion of today’s class for Geometry Jeopardy Bingo.

M 10/25/04

HW due: Read §3.8; write §3.8 #1-15 odd plus 14.

T 10/26/04

HW due: Review problems on pp. 162-164 #1, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 (two-column proof), 14, 15, plus pp. 165-167 #1-7 all, 14, 18, 24. Obviously, this is more than 35 minutes’ worth of work. You will need to do a minimum of 35 minutes’ worth for today, plus as much for additional test preparation over the next two days as seems prudent.

If you are feeling confident, why don’t you start with #24 on p. 167? This problem uses a great number of theorems and principles we have learned. The problem is practically a test all by itself. A two-column proof is required.

If you need more practice, here are more problems and an answer key.

Finally, maybe you would like to try another 2-column proof and yet another 2-column proof. Both of these are at a reasonable level of difficulty: challenging but not impossible. If you can do these under the time pressure of a test situation, you will be in good shape. (Ignore the “ultra bonus” problem on the second handout for now.)

W 10/27/04

HW due: Read §4.1; write §4.1 #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12.

During class, if time permits, we will look at the Practice Practice Test on Chapter 3.

After school today, Room R and/or S (to be announced): Optional test on Chapter 3. If you are feeling a little bit sick, you can take this test so that you won’t be stuck trying to make up tomorrow’s test on Friday as we all scramble to end the quarter. Or, you can sit for this test as a practice test. If you are happy with how you felt about the test, you can ask for it to be graded and you can take a day of rest tomorrow without penalty.

The only thing I can’t do, because of the limited time I have available this week, is to let you take two tests and have me grade both of them. Although I will allow you to take both, if you wish, you must tell me which one you want me to grade.

Th 10/28/04

Test on Chapter 3. This will be the same difficulty and format as yesterday’s optional test. As you prepare, you may find the Practice Practice Test and the answer key to the Practice Practice Test to be helpful.

F 10/29/04

Last day of first quarter. HW due: Read §4.2; write §4.2 #5, 7, 8, 9, 11.
