Monthly Schedule

(AP Calculus AB, Period D)

M 5/2/05

Quiz on the Cram Sheet.

HW due: AP review log (35 minutes minimum).

T 5/3/05

AP Exam, 8:00 a.m., Trapier Theater. Bring calculator, spare batteries, and several sharpened pencils. Leave your cell phone at home.

For those who are not taking the AP exam, meet in class at the usual time for a worksheet that will be due tomorrow.

W 5/4/05

HW due: Worksheet for non-AP takers only.

In class: Pick project groups (randomly) and discuss topic ideas.

Th 5/5/05

No class today. Use the time to work on your projects. I will be off campus for D, E, and F periods for a field trip, but I will be available for consultation at other times by appointment.

F 5/6/05

HW due today: Written rough draft of project proposal. Group leaders must deliver this to me by 10:45 a.m. In your proposal, describe (briefly) what you hope to accomplish and how it relates to the calculus. Group leaders, please plan on meeting in the normal classroom at the normal time. I want to meet face-to-face so that we can negotiate a project that is both interesting and feasible in the time available. If you have an AP exam or other conflict, then deputize one of your other group members to meet with me instead.

Attendance by non-group leaders is optional today. However, if you wish to participate in the negotiations, you need to attend.

M 5/9/05

Oral progress reports in Steuart 202. Attendance by everyone is mandatory unless you have an excused absence; no cuts, please. Use the rest of the class period to work on your projects or to study for your exams.

Group 1 (Salmon + 3 others): 10:45 a.m.
Group 2 (Clay + 3 others): 10:55 a.m.
Group 3 (Adrian + 3 others): 11:05 a.m.
Group 4 (Ben R., not Salmon, + 3 others): 11:15 a.m.

M 5/16/05

No class today (same schedule as Thursday 5/5/05).

T 5/17/05

Field Trip to the National Cryptologic Museum, Fort Meade, MD. Depart 8:00 a.m., return to campus approx. 12:35 p.m., well in advance of the Mother/Son Luncheon at 1:30 p.m. You will be excused from A through E period classes if you attend. If you do not attend, you must complete the polar arc length worksheet.

W 5/18/05

No class today (same schedule as Thursday 5/5/05). However, students who missed yesterday’s field trip must submit their polar arc length worksheet to me in person by lunchtime. Please note that I will be off campus for a funeral during all of D and E periods.

Th 5/19/05

Final Presentations by Group 3 (led by Adrian) and Group 4 (led by the other Ben R.).

Note: This is the second change to the original schedule. The reason that Groups 3 and 4 must present today is that Andrew J. and Ben R. will be at the Stotesbury Regatta tomorrow.

Also note: Your final presentation must include all of the following components.

1. Oral presentation involving all group members in some capacity, not to exceed 20 minutes.

2. Written report due Friday, May 20, by 2:00 p.m. (suggested length: 2-4 pages plus appendices, graphs, and data tables, if any). Remember that data or explanations taken from other sources must be properly footnoted. Algorithms or procedures that your group may have invented should be described clearly enough that a talented and ambitious student could replicate your work. It is not necessary to describe every tiny detail of what you did. If you need a few more days to bring your written report to a final state, please let me know so that I can grant a no-penalty extension. Reports turned in late without such an extension having been explicitly granted will incur a point penalty.

3. Group leader report. This is a paragraph or two, attached as the final page of the written report, in which the group leader lists the contributions made by all four group members and recommends how the points should be divided. It is not sufficient to say, “We all worked equally, and the points should be divided equally.” While it is true that a majority of calculus and statistics groups over the years have chosen an equal point division, such an arrangement is not automatic and must be justified by the group leader’s explanation. List the specific tasks that were performed by each group member. If a member skipped meetings, made himself unavailable, performed poor-quality work, or did not perform his tasks on time, state the facts and recommend an appropriate division of points. I usually follow the recommendation of the group leader, though of course I reserve the right to make adjustments.

F 5/20/05

HW due (for everyone): 50-point Final Quiz. This is a take-home essay examination. If you need more time to organize your thoughts, I will accept this Monday by 11:00 a.m. without penalty.

Also due today by 2:00 p.m.: Written project report, including group leader report. Deadline extensions are available but must be explicitly requested.

In class: Final Presentations by Group 1 (led by Salmon) and Group 2 (led by Clay).

No cuts today. Anyone with a planned absence today (e.g., Stotesbury Regatta) must hand in the Final Quiz early. Anyone with an emergency excused absence (illness or family emergency) must contact me by midnight today and must schedule an alternate version of the Final Quiz, most likely by fax or e-mail.
