STAtistics Monthly Schedule

(AP Statistics, Period E)

M 1/5/04

Classes resume. In class: Practice “sizing up” and solving multiple-choice questions from the AP review book.

T 1/6/04

HW due (every day this week): Work practice problems on your own from the review book.

In class today, I said I would post your Chapter 8 quiz (binomial/geometric distributions) as soon as Nicolas had taken it. However, because of a mistake on my part, I was unable to administer the quiz today as planned. Accordingly, I will ensure that tomorrow’s quiz, if it includes any problems concerning binomial or geometric distributions, contains problems from these topic areas that are no harder than the following sample problems:

Barron’s book, pp. 171-178, #17, 42, 43, 46, 47
additional sample problems
solution key

W 1/7/04

HW due: Bring written evidence of your review work to class so that it can be scanned while you are taking your test. At a minimum, this should consist of scratch work and corrections for problems that you missed. Preferably, the page number and problem number should also be shown. Notations made in the margins of the Barron’s book do not count; you should have one or more sheets of paper in your notebook.

Cumulative Quiz (50 points) in preparation for midterm exam. If you are absent today for any reason, you may take the alternate version on Friday.

The answer key and statistics are now available.

Th 1/8/04

HW due: Submit by e-mail, no later than 10:00 a.m. today, your group’s best take on your methodology writeup and release form. Submissions will be discussed in class and graded at a maximum of 30 points per student. You may find the sample methodology discussion and the 12/2/2003 calendar entry to be helpful. Considerable attention to detail and anticipation of how to avoid having things go wrong will be needed for full credit. Proofread your work carefully.

F 1/9/04

HW due: Final revision of methodology and release form. These will be scored at a maximum of 45 points per student. If you wish, you may delay submission until next Wednesday without penalty.

Cumulative Quiz (50 points) in preparation for midterm exam.
This is required for people who missed class on Wednesday, optional for everyone else. If you take both versions, the higher of the two will be scored. If you are happy with how you did on Wednesday, you may have a day of rest today.

The answer key and statistics for today’s quiz are now available. Of the 8 people who took the quiz today, 6 earned a higher score than they did on Wednesday.

Sat 1/10/04

Please leave a message for me (e-mail or voice mail) if you need extra help. I will try to get back to you within a reasonable amount of time.

Sun 1/11/04

I will not be available today, but if you have an emergency I can respond by e-mail early Monday morning.

M 1/12/04

Midterm Examination, 2:00–4:00 p.m., Room S. Bring calculator, spare batteries, and several sharpened pencils. You may use pen in the free-response section if you prefer, but pencil is recommended. Pencil is required in the multiple-choice section. Do not bring scratch paper or formula sheets; these supplies will be furnished.

Format: Approximately 1 hour’s worth of AP-style multiple choice (2¼ minutes each), followed by a “question 6”–style investigation (25 minutes) modeled after those found at the ends of the practice exams in the Barron’s book. The content for the questions may come from anything discussed throughout the year, including some topics (e.g., weighted averages, Simpson’s Paradox) that are not well represented in the Barron’s book.

In order to encourage you to come prepared as if this were the AP exam, I will provide a bonus of 1 exam point if you bring spare batteries.

T 1/13/04

If you need more time to revise your methodology/release writeup, you must submit a request in writing (e-mail preferred) by 3:30 p.m. today.

W 1/14/04

Methodology/release writeups will be accepted without penalty until 3:30 p.m. today, unless your group has already been granted an extension. Requests for extensions must be made, in writing, at least 24 hours in advance.

Th 1/15/04

I received two submissions late and one on time. Although I did agree to accept the two late submissions without penalty, I think it is fair to award a bonus to Peter’s group, which made the deadline with more than 2 hours to spare.

Exam grades were e-mailed this afternoon. Quarter and semester grades will be either e-mailed or posted sometime this weekend.

M 1/19/04

No school (holiday).

T 1/20/04

No school (teacher work day).

W 1/21/04

Classes resume.

Th 1/22/04

HW due: Begin reading in Chapter 9.

F 1/23/04

HW due (reading notes and written paragraph): Continue reading in Chapter 9. Target is through p. 477. Also, in your notebook, carefully rewrite (paraphrase) the box on p. 459 in your own words, creating a definition that you will find meaningful and memorable. Try to be accurate and complete in your rewording, without parroting the meaning that is already there. Try to describe how you think of sampling distributions.

M 1/26/04

No school (snow day).

T 1/27/04

No school (ice).

W 1/28/04

HW due today: Read through §9.2, including reading notes. The test originally scheduled for Monday has been postponed until tomorrow.

In class: Review for test.

Th 1/29/04

Test on Chapters 7 and 8. The format was supposed to be multiple choice and short answer, but unfortunately I forgot and made a test that was more similar to short answer and free response. I will make this up to you in some way.

F 1/30/04

HW due: Please work all the problems on yesterday’s test. If you do an accurate and thorough job, I will arrange for a significant bonus to help improve your test score. Open notes, open Internet, open book, open friends are all OK, but no copying is allowed.
