HW due: Survey group leaders will
make preliminary oral reports to the class. If the group leader is absent for
any reason, including an excused absence, it is his responsibility to
deputize another group member to deliver the report in his absence. This
presentation will be graded as part of the project score.

Test on Chapters 3 and
4.
As you prepare for the test, you may find the following information helpful:
- Multiple-choice
questions will be similar to those in the Barron’s book.
- Free-response
questions will be similar to old test problems or problems at the ends
of Chapters 3 and 4. Try test questions 13-30 from Sept. 1998,
questions 2-4 and 11-15 from Oct.
1998, the Oct. 2000 test
excerpt, and the Big Quiz
from Oct. 2000. There is a LSRL
handout that is quite informative, and an answer key to the Big Quiz is
also available. If you are patient, you can check the archives of
previous years to find many other sample questions and handouts, but
these should be enough to keep you busy.
- Fill-ins will be
based on terminology presented in class and in the textbook reading.

Make-up test for the 5
students who were unable to take yesterday’s test.
The rest of the class has a day of rest. Since your projects from earlier in
the quarter are still not graded (!), I am changing tomorrow’s item from a
final project due date to a draft
version due date. The draft version will not be graded, but I will give you
feedback on it in class so that you can hopefully revise it to an “A” level
before submitting it for grading.

HW due: Draft version of group
survey project report. Be sure to include the following:
- Raw data in
row-column format, one column for each variable and one row for each
subject (i.e., each person who was polled). Subjects should be
identified by number, not by name.
- Blank copy of survey
instrument.
- Group leader report
(approx. 1 paragraph) explaining in some detail who did what and
justifying the point split requested. If this report is missing on
Friday, the group leader’s score will be decreased by 10 points.
The purpose of this exercise is to give you a chance to submit a full package
and receive feedback on it before
receiving an actual grade. If you group prefers to skip this assignment, that
is your choice, but you will miss out on the chance to revise your project
upward.
Zach and Michael will be taking their test during this period. The rest of us
will review for Thursday’s quest after we have finished with the
feedback/review portion of the class.

Last
day of first quarter.
HW due: Oral report and final written version of group survey project
report. Be sure to include the following:
- Raw data in
row-column format, one column for each variable and one row for each
subject (i.e., each person who was polled). Subjects should be identified
by number, not by name.
- Blank copy of survey
instrument.
- Group leader report
(approx. 1 paragraph) explaining in some detail who did what and
justifying the point split requested. If this report is missing, the
group leader’s score will be decreased by 10 points.
Today’s oral and written reports will be graded and will be included in your
first quarter average. If nobody from your group is able to attend today to
turn in the assignment, you will need to phone me at 703-599-6624 to make
alternate arrangements and set a time to give the oral presentation over the
phone.
The group leader (or a person designated by the group leader) will present
the bottom-line findings and possible questions for further research in an
informal talk of 2 to 5 minutes.
Also covered today: Computation of weighted averages.
