STAtistics Monthly Schedule

(AP Statistics, Period E)

W 9/3/03

First day of school. Welcome back!

Discussion: What is mathematics? What is statistics? What is a statistic? What is a parameter?

Th 9/4/03

Quiz on sizzly. (Be sure to cross your z’s, etc.)

Note: Depending on how good your handwriting is, you may also need to pay attention to the following letters: b (distinguish from 6), j (cursive style, similar to i), q (remember the tail), t (distinguish from +), u (curved), and v (pointed). You also need to know the Greek letters
a, b, m, p, r, s, S, and c. Finally, in statistics, remember to put serifs on your capital W, X, Y, and Z when they are used as random variables.

HW due: Read §1.1.

F 9/5/03

HW due: Reply to e-mail from Mr. Hansen, or send e-mail manually if you did not receive a message in your inbox. In your message, include a brief summary of the four topic areas of AP Statistics. (You can find these on the Web.)

M 9/8/03

HW due: Read through the end of Chapter 1, including the examples, and prepare a written statement (1-2 sentences) of an exploratory data analysis project that you would like to conduct.

T 9/9/03

HW due: Read this article and write out the following problems: #1.32, 1.34, 1.36, 1.41. Be sure to read #1.34 carefully so that you don’t waste time.

Don’t forget your written HW that was due Monday. In class, we will divide into groups and will choose a winning exploratory data analysis proposal from each group.

W 9/10/03

No additional written HW due, but be sure to meet with your coworker on the group project to flesh out your data gathering concept. The due date for your final report will be in 2 weeks.

Th 9/11/03

HW due: Written project proposal. Follow the Project 1 assignment guidelines. Also, make sure your earlier HW is fully cleaned up and ready to submit if necessary.

F 9/12/03

HW due: Revised written project proposal and milestone chart for Project 1. Also read §2.1 and write #2.7, 2.9 (diagrams required).

M 9/15/03

HW due: Read §2.2 and write #2.22, 2.23, 2.25.

In class: Review for test.

Here is a practice test that you can use to help focus your studying. Please find a quiet work area and set a timer for 34 minutes, or 51 minutes if you qualify for extended time. Omit questions 7, 22, and 23, since we have not discussed those topics yet. In #14, change “normal quantile plot” to “dot plot.” You can do all of the other questions, including #21. The practice test shows the difficulty and style of the real test, but please remember that the real test will have different questions and will probably include additional topics (e.g., tabular or manual computation of the sample s.d.) that we discussed in class.

Important: If you cannot finish the practice test within the time limit, that is a sign that you will need to study harder or work more practice problems to improve your proficiency.

T 9/16/03

Test #1. You are responsible for the textbook contents through §2.2, the Web article assigned for 9/9, and everything mentioned in class.

Important: Bring your 3-ring binder to class today. While you are taking your test, I will conduct a general HW check of all assignments since the beginning of the year.

W 9/17/03

HW due: Read §3.1 and take notes on a fresh sheet in your binder.

Note: I have modified
the HW guidelines to clarify that from now on, when there is a reading assignment, you will be expected to make at least a few notes related to the reading. Keep these notes (definitions of key terms, questions you wish to ask in class, etc.) in your binder. Notes in the margin of your textbook can be helpful to you, but they will not count for credit.

Th 9/18/03

No additional HW due, but you can work on your exploratory data analysis project.

F 9/19/03

No school (hurricane).

M 9/22/03

HW due: Read through the end of Chapter 3 (p. 165) and take notes in your notebook

T 9/23/03

HW due: #3.50, 3.52, 3.56.

W 9/24/03

No additional HW due today. Please work on your project.

Today was the original due date for Project 1: Exploratory Data Analysis. However, because of the hurricane, the date has been slipped to Friday.

Th 9/25/03

HW due: #3.43, 3.49.

F 9/26/03

HW due: Project 1: Exploratory Data Analysis. However, because of the persistent power failures, Monday will be acceptable.

M 9/29/03

HW due: Read §4.1.

T 9/30/03

HW due: Write #4.7.
