Geometry / Mr. Hansen
2/20/2004

Name: ____________________________

“BIG TRIG” Challenge:
Official Rules 2004

1.

Any student from the STA Upper School is eligible: any form, any section.

2.

The referee is Mr. Hansen, and all contest-related decisions by the referee are final.

3.

If there are more contestants than computers, some doubling up or waiting of turns may be required.

4.

Team entries are allowed but must be approved by the referee.

5.

Individual competitors may take 5 minutes of practice. Teams may have up to 6 minutes (total).

6.

The only tools permitted are pencil, paper, and a scientific or graphing calculator.

7.

All calculators are subject to inspection and must be approved by the referee.

8.

Answer formats are very strict: xx.000 cm and xx°00¢ are the only acceptable formats.

9.

After the practice period ends, the start time for your round will be recorded. You must maintain a minimum average pace of 1 problem every 90 seconds (1 problem every 60 seconds for team entries).

10.

If you wish to have fresh batteries, you must request them before your timed round begins.

11.

Your round ends when you make an incorrect entry. Show your score to the referee immediately so that it can be recorded. If you delay showing your score, your average pace may be too slow for your score to qualify as an official score.

12.

Type carefully. Once you’re out, you’re out.

13.

No whining. The only exception is in the rare event of a software error, in which case the referee will make a manual adjustment to the score if you request a referee conference. Beware, most alleged errors are actually user errors. There will be no adjustments for battery failures, calculator failures, typing errors, computer lock-ups, or computer time-outs. The computers will shut down automatically after several minutes of inactivity.

14.

Use the DEL/BS (delete/backspace) key, not the left arrow key, to correct typing errors.

15.

Enter the degree symbol (°) by typing SHIFT + GRPH + @. On some of the computers, the character may not echo on the screen.

16.

All computers must remain in plain view of the referee at all times.

17.

The person or team with the highest official score will be declared the winner. Contestants will not be allowed any additional rounds unless the referee so decrees (e.g., in the event of a tie).

18.

First prize will be naming rights to a previously unnamed computer of the winner’s choice. In addition, a special prize (cash value approximately $1.00) will be awarded to any individual contestant who gets more than 24 consecutive correct answers, which was last year’s record.
