Geometry Monthly Schedule

(Periods A and B)

M 1/5/04

HW due: Read §8.4; write §8.3 #10, 11, 15, 16; §8.4 #3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14.

T 1/6/04

HW due: Read §8.5; write §8.5 #1-14 all, 19, 29. Also, use the hints provided in class on Monday to redo §8.3 #15 in a correct version.

W 1/7/04

Both classes meet in Steuart 202 today.

HW due:
Bring all recent HW so that it can be scanned while you are taking the quiz.

Happy Quiz (50 pts., but counts only if it helps you) on §§8.1–8.4 only. Note that today’s quiz (for both periods) will omit §8.5 There will be about 10 minutes before the quiz starts to discuss §8.5.

Th 1/8/04

No additional HW due, but make sure you have corrected all your Chapter 8 problems, especially §8.5

In class: Midterm review, day 1.

If you run out of questions to ask, we will take questions from the practice midterm exam. However, note that there are topic areas and types of questions that may appear on the real exam even though they are not reflected on the practice exam. Here are some 2-column proofs that you might want to work for practice: #24 on p. 155, #14 on p. 215, and #21 on p. 363.

F 1/9/04

Midterm review, day 2.

Continue working on your practice midterm exam and the practice proofs listed in yesterday’s calendar entry.

M 1/12/04

Midterm Examination, 8:00–10:00 a.m. Bring several sharpened pencils. You may use pen if you prefer, but pencil is strongly recommended. Use of a red pen will disqualify your paper. Do not bring scratch paper; adequate room for scratch work will be provided. Compass and straightedge are optional.

Important: Although students from other sections will be bringing calculators, you should not bring one. Instead, for any problem that requires time-consuming arithmetic, simply leave your answer in an algebraic form. For example, if a questions asks for the sum of the degree measures of a nonagon, you would write

(n – 2)180 = (9 – 2)180 = 7(180)

and simply circle the final result. However, if a question asks for the sum of the degree measures of a dodecagon (12-gon), you would write

(n – 2)180 = (12 – 2)180 = 10(180) = 1800

since the computation is so simple. Note that in both cases, WORK IS REQUIRED. Merely writing 1260 or 1800 will not earn full credit.

(Some problems require no work. For example, if a problem asks for the sum of the external degree measures of a pentadecagon, you can write 360 immediately.)

F 1/16/04

Exam scores have been e-mailed to everyone. If anyone knows Andrew R.’s new e-mail address, please send it to me so that I can re-send his message that bounced on the first try.

Quarter and semester grades are not yet computed. They will be either e-mailed or posted later this weekend.

M 1/19/04

No school (holiday).

T 1/20/04

No school (teacher work day).

W 1/21/04

Classes resume. Welcome to our new A period student Patrick, and B period students Will, Joey, Jaime, J.P., Ali, and Jeremiah!

Th 1/22/04

HW due: Read §8.5; write §8.5 #1-14 all, 19, 29. (This is a repeat of an assignment from earlier this month. Even if you have already done it, please revisit it to make sure you have not applied the Side-Splitter Theorem incorrectly.)

Whether you are a new student or a returning student, be sure to follow the homework guidelines.

F 1/23/04

HW due: §9.1 #4d, 5-9 all; §9.2 #2-12 even. Reading notes (normally required) are optional for today, because these sections are both largely a review of Lower School mathematics.

M 1/26/04

No school (snow day).

T 1/27/04

No school (ice). The test that was originally scheduled for Monday has been postponed.

W 1/28/04

Delayed opening, no A period class. The test originally scheduled for Monday has now been rescheduled for tomorrow.

Th 1/29/04

Test on Chapter 8. The format will be Always/Sometimes/Never, multiple choice, and short answer.

F 1/30/04

HW due: Read §9.3 (reading notes required); write §9.3 #1-5 all.
