Geometry Monthly Schedule

(Periods A and B)

W 9/3/03

First day of school. Welcome back!

Discussion: What is mathematics? What is geometry?

Th 9/4/03

Quiz on sizzly. (Be sure to cross your z’s, etc.)

Note: Depending on how good your handwriting is, you may also need to pay attention to the following letters: b (distinguish from 6), j (cursive style, similar to i), q (remember the tail), t (distinguish from +), u (curved), and v (pointed). You also need to know the Greek letters
a, b, g, q, p, S, f (sometimes written j), and y.

HW due: Read §§1.1 and 1.2. Suggested problems (not for a grade): §1.1 assorted.

F 9/5/03

HW due: §1.2 #5, 8, 9, 11, 14, 16, 17, 20. Also, reply to e-mail from Mr. Hansen, or send e-mail manually if you did not receive a message in your inbox. Challenge problem: Estimate the mass of the earth.

M 9/8/03

HW due: Read §1.3; write §1.3 #1, 3, 7, 8, 12-15 all.

T 9/9/03

HW due: Read this article. Write §1.2 #23, §1.3 #6, 16.

W 9/10/03

HW due: Read §1.4; write §1.4 #2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14.

Th 9/11/03

HW due: Read §1.5; write §1.5 #4, 8, 13, 18-22 all.

F 9/12/03

HW due: Read §§1.6 and 1.7. A quiz is possible. (No written assignment due today.)

M 9/15/03

HW due: Read §1.8; write §1.7 #1, 5, 7, 8, 10-12 all. A fun challenge (not required) is problem #14.

T 9/16/03

HW due: Read §1.9; write §1.8 #1ab, 2b, 3, 4, 5bc, 9, §1.9 #3-6 all, and the following question:

Give at least five (5) symbols or words that each mean the same thing as biconditional.

W 9/17/03

PLEASE NOTICE: Class for both “A” and “B” periods will be in Steuart 202 today.

HW due:
Practice test on Chapter 1, plus your choice of review problems. The practice test has length and difficulty similar to the real test, but please remember that the actual questions will be different and may include areas not represented on the practice test. For example, the practice test happens to have no questions on probability (§1.9), but the real test will probably have at least one or two questions on that subject. For additional practice problems, you must work a selection of review problems #1-39 on pp. 54-59. (The answers to all odd-numbered problems can be found beginning on p. 750.)

When I check your homework today, I will make sure that you did the practice test and at least a small selection of review problems.

In class: Review for test.

Th 9/18/03

Test on Chapter 1. You are responsible for the textbook contents through §1.9, the Web article assigned for 9/9, and everything mentioned in class.

Important: Bring your 3-ring binder to class today. While you are taking your test, I will conduct a general HW check of all assignments since the beginning of the year.

F 9/19/03

HW due (even though school was cancelled by Isabel): Read §§2.1 and 2.2; write notes on reading, plus §2.1 #2, 7, 9-11 all, §2.2 #4, 6, 11, 20. No quiz today.

Note: I have modified
the HW guidelines to clarify that from now on, when there is a reading assignment, you will be expected to make at least a few notes related to the reading. Keep these notes (definitions of key terms, questions you wish to ask in class, etc.) in your binder. Notes in the margin of your textbook can be helpful to you, but they will not count for credit.

M 9/22/03

HW due: Read §2.3; write §2.3 #8-12 all; and fill out the Conditional Statements Worksheet. Because of the difficulty in downloading the worksheet during the storm and ensuing power failures, I will accept the worksheet without penalty tomorrow.

T 9/23/03

HW due: Conditional Statements Worksheet. At the end of class (or by 3:30 p.m. if you cannot finish during class), turn in Sketchpad Lab I.

The famous three houses/three utilities puzzle can indeed be solved in 2-D as I stated in class, but there is a trick involved in using a special surface, namely the outside of a torus (“doughnut”). I remembered seeing a solution in print—years ago—for this puzzle, but I must have forgotten that the surface was not a standard Euclidean surface. Please accept my sincere apology. I am sure that the B period class can think of a suitable remedy.

W 9/24/03

HW due: Read §2.4; write §2.4 #3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 15, 17.

Be sure to take notes as you read §2.4. For example, you could write the following:

Supps. of the same Š are @
Supps. of
@ Šs are @
Comps. of the same
Š are @
Comps. of
@ Šs are @

See, that didn’t take very long!

Th 9/25/03

HW due: Read §§2.5 and 2.6; write §2.5  #1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 14, 18.

F 9/26/03

HW due: Read §2.6; write §2.6 #1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 14.

M 9/29/03

HW due: Read §2.7; write §2.7 #2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 13, 14, 16, plus your choice of either 17 or 18.

T 9/30/03

HW due: Read §2.8; write §2.8 #1-5 all, 7-15 odd.
