Geometry Monthly Schedule

(Periods D and E)

M 3/3/03

HW due (required): Prove Theorem 86 on p.469 and fill out the Trigonometry Problems Worksheet.

Please also try to read §10.5. This is a rather difficult section, and you may need my help to understand it. The key is the cartoon on p.472. After you have read this section, you may find the “Angle Half SAD” memory aid to be useful.

Also, note that Theorem 86 (an inscribed
Š is half the measure of its arc) is reasonable even if you can’t understand the rest of §10.5. We have talked about this theorem many times before, and as long as you remember to consider all 3 cases, you should be able to do the proof. Contact me by voice mail or e-mail if you get stuck.

T 3/4/03

HW due: §10.5 #1-5 all, 7, 15. Also finish your proof of Theorem 86, and create (and solve) a puzzle to put on the board for the class.

W 3/5/03

HW due: Read §10.6 and solve at least 2 angle-arc puzzles created by students. (Please work on ones that you did not already do during class.) There are several others still on the board in Room S if you prefer to work on those instead.

Th 3/6/03

HW due: Finish the Mike L. and Sam W. puzzles, plus §10.6 #1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 14. Also, finish correcting your Trigonometry Problems Worksheet if you have not already done so. (You should check your answers against the answer key and make sure everything is correct, including units.)

News alert! The STA bookstore has five (5) TI-83 calculators remaining at the bargain price of $25.00. These are slightly obsolete compared to the TI-83 Plus, but you can buy one and do everything that you will need to do for your sophomore through senior years—even cheaper than on eBay! The only features you will not have are the flash RAM and “apps” archive features, but nothing in the STA math department requires those. Features you will enjoy immediately on your TI-83 include the ability to save up to 26 variables (A through Z, plus
q), lists, matrices, and (drum roll, please) degree-minute-second conversions.

F 3/7/03

HW due: §10.7 #3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 17, 19.

All the TI-83 calculators have been sold. Congratulations to all who were able to snap one up before they disappeared!

M 3/10/03

HW due: §10.8 #1, 6-9 all, 16; §10.9 #5, 6, 16, 17. Find the typo in §10.8 #6 for a bonus point. (The typo does not interfere with your ability to solve the problem.)

T 3/11/03

HW due: pp.505-509 #1-5 all, 7, 8, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26a. After you have tried most of the problems, check the answer key and bring any remaining questions to class.

As you study for your test, please also work these puzzle problems with answer key.

W 3/12/03

Test on Chapter 10. There will also be a trigonometry word problem similar to the “Romeo and Juliet” problem from the Trigonometry Problems Worksheet (you may wish to re-work a few and check against the TPW answer key).

Th 3/13/03

No additional HW due today. In class: Proof that an acre equals 43,560 square feet, plus discussion of §§11.1 and 11.2.

F 3/14/03

HW due: §11.1 #1bc, 10; §11.2 #1, 10, 14, 15, 18. I apologize for not posting these before 7:30 p.m., and I will be lenient if you cannot finish all the problems before class. Please do as many as you can, however.

After everyone has finished all the HW, we will go outside and enjoy the warm weather by estimating the height of the west towers of the Cathedral! (Since we ran out of time, the Cathedral tower worksheet will not be due until April Fool’s Day.)

March 15-30

Spring break.

If time permits, I will post third quarter grades (by codename) on Monday, March 31.

M 3/31/03

Classes resume. (No additional HW due today; enjoy your break.)

GRADES

Third quarter grades are now posted.
