HappyCal Monthly Schedule

(Honors AP Calculus, Period B)

Sun 2/2/03

The answer key to even-numbered problems in §8-9, plus review and test questions from Chapter 8 will help you study.

M 2/3/03

Test on Chapter 8.

T 2/4/03

No additional HW due today. If you have time, you may wish to begin reading in Chapter 9, but you have my permission to take a well-deserved night off.

W 2/5/03

HW due: §9-2 #1-11 all. You already know the answer to #11 (if you paid attention during class), but the work involves something you might not expect would work.

Additional HW required from people who missed the test Monday: Take the Test on Chapter 8 under time pressure as indicated. I will check to make sure you did this, but it will not be graded unless you had set up special proctoring arrangements with me in advance.

Th 2/6/03

HW due: §9-3 #40, 44; §9-4 #1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 12.

F 2/7/03

No school (snow day). Please continue working on your HW. With the additional day off and the weekend, you will be expected to finish all the problems in both §9-4 and §9-5.

M 2/10/03

HW due: §9-5 #1-33 mo3. Because of the long gap, you will be expected to have your HW completely finished, not just “40-minute partially finished.” Michael, we will begin with a HW scan!

T 2/11/03

HW due: Read the excellent on-line tutorial on partial fractions, and work a selection of problems on that Web page for practice. (Keep a written record in your notebook.) Then write §9-6 #17, 18, 31; §9-7 #1-17 (free choice) plus #24 (required).

“Free choice” means that you should do enough of each category so that you can convince yourself that you understand the method. Also, note that since trigonometric substitution is not covered on the AP examination, we are treating §9-6 as a lower-priority topic.

Also today: American Mathematics Competition (AMC), D and E periods. You are expected to participate. Good luck!

W 2/12/03

HW due: §9-8 #4, 5, 10; §9-9 #5, 10.

Th 2/13/03

HW due: §9-10 #1-20 (free choice of at least 5), plus 22, 23, 24.

F 2/14/03

No school (faculty professional day).

M 2/17/03

No school (holiday).

T 2/18/03

No school (snow).

W 2/19/03

HW due: §9-11 #1-102 all. For most of the problems, simply write the name of the technique (e.g., “trig. sub. w/ completing the square” for #31). Here are the problems you should actually solve:

Last names A-H: #1, 4, 7, 10, … , 100, plus #102.
Last names K-N: #2, 5, 8, 11, … , 101, plus #79.
Last names P-Z: #3-102 mo3, plus #79.

There are 34 problems for you to solve (15-30 seconds each for most, but some are harder) and 68 problems to analyze and state a method (15 seconds each). Altogether, this assignment should take you approximately 2 hours. Please log your time. For trigonometric substitution problems, you may wish to indicate the substitution (“Let
q = _______”), but do not actually solve. The faster and more proficient you can become at analyzing problems and deciding what technique to use, the better you will do on the portions of the AP exam that deal with computation.

Th 2/20/03

HW due: §10-2 #1-9 odd, 12, 16.

F 2/21/03

HW due: §10-3 #3, 6, 9, 15, 16.

In class: Review for test, but there are no additional review problems specifically assigned. (The long §9-11 HW serves as your review for Chapter 9, and the HW due yesterday and today cover everything in Chapter 10 that you need to know for the test.)

Sun 2/23/03

The solution key to the Chapter 8 test is now available. The Chapter 8 test itself is also available if you wish to take it over again for practice. Tomorrow's "Mulligan" test will be quite similar.

M 2/24/03

Optional “Mulligan” Test on Chapter 8. You may take a day of rest if you wish. If your score on this test is lower than on your original Chapter 8 test, your original score will stand.

T 2/25/03

Review.

W 2/26/03

Test on §§9-1 through 10-3. Because of the snow delay and the large number of absences, this was a multiple-choice portion only. However, it will be scored with the possibility of partial credit.

Th 2/27/03

Test on §§9-1 through 10-3 (continued). If you were one of the 5 students who missed yesterday’s half-test, you must arrive on time today to take a different set of multiple-choice problems. These will be scored in the usual AP style, with 2 points for a correct answer, 0 points for an omission, and –½ point for an incorrect guess.

The free-response portion of the test will be 20 minutes long (1 AP-style problem, plus 1 additional free-response integral) and will begin at approximately
9:20.

People who took yesterday’s multiple-choice portion should arrive 20 minutes late. Be in place by
9:15, and please wait quietly in the hallway or in the refectory. (Points will be deducted if you are audible inside the testing room.) The clocks in the refectory and in Trapier Theater are accurate.

F 2/28/03

No school (snow). However, I will be contacting each of you by telephone so that I can (1) finalize the AP exam roster for Mr. Andreoli and (2) make sure you can do Monday’s assignment.
