HappyCal Monthly Schedule

(Honors AP Calculus, Period B)

W 9/4/02

First day of class.

Handout #1: HappyCal Class Policies and Required Equipment
Handout #2: Learn the Alphabet
Handout #3: Elements of Good Math HW

Th 9/5/02

Quiz #1 (5 pts.): Alphabet Mastery Quiz.

HW due: Read §§1-1 and 1-2; write §1-1 #1, 2, and send an e-mail message with your name (first and last). Please indicate the name by which you wish to be addressed and a pronunciation key if necessary. If you have more than one e-mail account, please send your message from the one that you check most frequently.

F 9/6/02

Quiz and HW due today are both postponed because the Cathedral's Web access was down overnight.

In class: Address the challenge problem posed at end of class Thursday. How would you translate the definition of limit (green box in middle of p.10 of textbook) into mathematical notation?

M 9/9/02

HW due: Read §1-3; write §1-2 #2-10 even, 11-27 odd.

Quiz scheduled for today has been postponed (again!) because of the fire drill.

T 9/10/02

HW due: Read §1-4; write §1-3 #1-9 odd, 11-14 all.

W 9/11/02

No class today (only "A" period will hold regular class at the regular time).

Th 9/12/02

Quiz #2 (5 pts.): Seven or eight words that summarize the four topic areas of AP Calculus BC. You can find these by visiting the College Board site.

Double HW due: Read §1-5; write §1-4 #1, 3, 6, 10-13, 15, 17, plus §1-5 #1-15 odd, 16-19.

F 9/13/02

HW due: Read through §2-2; write §1-6 #1.

M 9/16/02

HW due: Attempt §2-2 #2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13. These will be due in a final form by Wednesday, 9/18.

T 9/17/02

No additional HW due today (except to watch Washington defeat Philadelphia?). During class, we will attempt §2-1 #1-3 and discuss the old HW, including §2-2 #2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13.

W 9/18/02

Th 9/19/02

HW due: Read §2-4; write §2-4 #6, 9-13, 16, 20, 40, 42, 58, 65, 67-69.

Optional HW (worth 5/5 if you do it): Revisit Quiz #3 for speed and accuracy practice.

F 9/20/02

HW due: Read §2-5; write §2-5 #1-9 odd, 11-14 all. There will be no mini-quiz today.

M 9/23/02

HW due (required): Read §2-6; write §2-6 #1-9 odd, 12, 13.

Additional HW (optional): §2-7 #R1-R6, plus sample multiple-choice questions with answer key. Although these problems are optional, you are strongly advised to work at least some of them for your own benefit. Calculus multiple-choice questions are much harder than they look, and you will probably have some on your test.

In class: Review Chapters 1 and 2.

T 9/24/02

Test #1 (100 pts.) on Chapters 1 and 2.

W 9/25/02

No additional HW due today. If you are behind on some of the problems, now would be a good time to get caught up, especially on §2-5, which we have not discussed yet.

Th 9/26/02

HW due: §3-1 #3; §3-2 #1, 2, 3, 5, 8.

Calculator note: As time ran out yesterday, we were starting to discuss the four permitted features of graphing calculators on the AP examination. Please read this handout carefully.

F 9/27/02

Quiz based on CFU sheet, the permitted calculator features handout, and the notational oddities discussed in class yesterday.

HW due: CFU sheet plus §3-2 #6, 9-17 all.

M 9/30/02

HW due: §3-3 #5, 12 (incl. short journal entry); §3-4 #5, 11, 15, 23, 25-27, 29, 39. If you cannot do §3-4 yet, then please focus on the journal entry and getting caught up on older HW.

In class: Go over Test #1 (Chapters 1 and 2).
