Monthly Schedule

(STAtistics, Period D)

W 4/1/15
F

No class.

Th 4/2/15
G

HW due (both blocks): Prepare for a double quiz on the STAT TESTS summary sheet. Everything on this sheet needs to be in your memory, with the exception of the assumptions for the LSRL t test, which we have not done yet.

F 4/3/15
A

HW due (both blocks): Prepare for a quiz on the 20 “starred” problems from the Must-Pass Quiz. Use the link provided, or perform a Google search on the words MUST PASS QUIZ in any order.

M 4/6/15
B

Block 3 HW due:

1. The counts below come from an SRS of students at the Nimrod Academy in North Upperville, WY. Is there evidence of an association between shoe size and antisocial behavior? Perform an independence test at the  = 0.05 level. Show all steps, including some of the work for the calculation of expected counts and the calculation of the test statistic. You may omit the first “P” step, as we discussed in class, but show all of the other steps.

2. Prepare for Round 1 of the Must-Pass Quiz. There are a few questions (only a few) that you can’t answer at this point; if you draw one of those, you can earn metaknowledge credit by saying that you aren’t required to know it yet. Everything else is expected to be in your knowledge bank by now.

Block 4: No class.

T 4/7/15
C

Block 3: No class.

Block 4 HW due: See yesterday’s calendar entry.

W 4/8/15
D

Alumni Day. Ruslan and Alex need to report for roll call, but class will be brief. Form VI students will be at Alumni Day activities. Anyone who wishes to take the MPQ in private after school may do so.

Th 4/9/15
E

HW due (both blocks): Write #4abcd from last year’s test, showing all PHASTPC steps in part (a). Remember that in the “A” step, you have to do 5 things:

--Establish that the true fit really is linear. That means that you (1) check the scatterplot for signs of linearity, (2) check the residual plot for a lack of patterns, and (3) verify that the r2 value is fairly strong.

--While checking the residual plot, make sure to (4) check that the s.d. of the residuals does not vary with x. In other words, there should be no “R.J. trumpet flaring” of the residuals, which would violate the assumptions for regression. (You can’t use that term in your writeup, unfortunately. Just say that the s.d. appears to be fairly uniform across all values of x.)

--Check the assumption of normally distributed residuals for each x. Since you can’t actually do this, do the best you can: NPP or histogram of all the residuals, along with a note saying that since there is no gross departure from normality seen, the assumption of normal distribution of residuals for each x appears to be reasonable.

Adequate written evidence (graphs and sentences) must be furnished for all steps. You receive no credit for things that you ponder internally but fail to write down.

In class: MPQ continues.

F 4/10/15
F

No class.

M 4/13/15
G

HW due (both blocks): Write #12.40ab on p. 682, #12.45ab on pp. 683-684, and #13.28abcd on pp. 723-724. Perform all of the PHASTPC steps for #12.40 and #12.45.

Note: This assignment was supposed to have been posted on Friday afternoon. However, because of a technical glitch, the website was not updated until Monday morning. Therefore, we will work on these problems together during class.

Solution key has been posted to hwstore.org. Check it out!

T 4/14/15

No classes (Diversity Forum).

W 4/15/15
A

Test (100 pts.) in both classes. Questions will be similar to last year’s test on chi-square and LSRL t procedures. However, since we are in MPQ and AP review season, some questions may be taken from earlier in the year as well.

Th 4/16/15
B

MPQ continues (Block 3 only).

HW due (both sections): Start working nightly on problems from the Barron’s AP review book. For now, this is informal. More elaborate timekeeping and recordkeeping requirements will be imposed beginning this week and will be spot-checked beginning next Tuesday.

F 4/17/15
C

MPQ continues (Block 4 only).

Continue working on your Barron’s AP review problems.

M 4/20/15

No school (Phi Beta Kappa day).
