Monthly Schedule

(STAtistics, Period D)

F 2/1/13

No additional HW is due. Focus on patching up your existing problems and keeping up with your reading.

M 2/4/13

No class.

T 2/5/13

Double Quiz (20 pts.) on all recent class discussions is likely today. You will want to review your reading as well as your class notes.

W 2/6/13

HW due:

1. Play with the sampling distribution simulation that we were exploring yesterday. Be prepared to answer “shape prediction” questions and questions about s.d. calculations in another possible quiz.

2. Write #8.37, 9.2, 9.5, 9.6, and the questions below.

3.(a) For #9.5 and 9.6, what is the symbol you should attach to the estimate in each case?
   (b) Which estimate, the estimate for #9.5 or the estimate for #9.6, comes from a sampling distribution having the smaller s.d.? Why?
   (c) Compute the estimated s.d. of the sampling distribution for the statistic of interest in #9.5.
   (d) Compute the estimated s.d. of the sampling distribution for the statistic of interest in #9.6.

4. The sampling distribution’s estimated s.d. in #9.5 and 9.6 has a name. It is called the standard error of the statistic. What abbreviation is used for standard error?

5.(a) The illustration (Figure 9.4) on p. 487 shows that out of 100 randomly simulated 95% confidence intervals for the parameter p, only _______ actually captured the true value of p. (Fill in the blank.)
   (b) Is the situation in part (a) a mistake in the textbook? Explain briefly.

Th 2/7/13

HW due: Write #9.10 on p. 482, #9.12 on p. 492, #9.14 on on p. 493, and #9.24 and 9.26 on p. 494.

F 2/8/13

No additional written HW is due. Use your time to improve and complete your existing problems that have already been assigned. If you are stuck, you should be conferring with classmates or feverishly dashing off e-mails to Mr. Hansen!
