Monthly Schedule

(MODD, Period C)

M 12/3/012

HW due: Read pp. 361-362, 364-373, 376-380.

T 12/4/012

No class.

W 12/5/012

HW due: Work on your semester project. You have 2 days and can hopefully make some real progress!

Th 12/6/012

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

HW due: Work through this demonstration of the Hamming(7,4) code. Notice that the parity bits are at positions 1, 2, and 4, and the data bits are at positions 3, 5, 6, and 7 of the 7-bit codeword that is to be transmitted. Read the accompanying description, and make sure you understand how the parity bits and error position are computed. YOU WILL NEED TO WORK THROUGH A FEW EXAMPLES TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ERROR POSITION IS BEING DETECTED CORRECTLY. Please keep notes in order to demonstrate that you have performed several worked examples. Show how you computed the parity bits.

There may be a short quiz to ensure that you are familiar with the terminology (though not necessarily with performing the technique accurately).

Parity bit 1 equals the sum (modulo 2) of data bits 1, 2, and 4 (i.e., codeword bits 3, 5, and 7).

Parity bit 2 equals the sum (modulo 2) of data bits 1, 3, and 4 (i.e., codeword bits 3, 6, and 7).

Parity bit 3 (at position 4) equals the sum (modulo 2) of data bits 2, 3, and 4 (i.e., codeword bits 5, 6, and 7).

“Modulo 2” means that we add the bits up and discard the carry, if any.

F 12/7/012

HW due:

1. Review yesterday’s demonstration. Make sure you understand it and can compute the parity bits (and error bits) with facility. A quiz is possible.

2. Write #9 on p. 375.

3. Write #14 and 15 on p. 382.

M 12/10/012

HW due: Read pp. 397-404, 410-417. Reading notes are required, as always.

T 12/11/012

No class.

W 12/12/012

HW due: Work on your semester project.

Th 12/13/012

HW due: Write #11 and 15 on pp. 402-403, plus #4, 7, 5, 6 (in that order) on p. 417.

F 12/14/012

HW due: Work on your semester project. Also, finish yesterday’s assignment if you have not already done so.

M 12/17/012

HW due: Work on your semester project. Also, finish the previously assigned work if you have not already done so.

T 12/18/012

No class.
