Monthly Schedule

(Honors AP Calculus, Period A)

M 12/3/012

HW due: Read §6.9; write §6-9 #3-90 mo3. These should go quickly as soon as you get into the groove.

T 12/4/012

HW due: Read §7-1; write §7-1 #1-6 all. Note that #6 is not really “just for fun,” since it is required. However, you may find it to be fun, and in that case all is well.

W 12/5/012

HW due: Read §7-2; write §7-2 #1, 4, 5, 9. Note that #9 is a rehash of #6 from yesterday’s assignment.

Th 12/6/012

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

HW due: Read §7-3 (reading notes optional today); write §7-3 #9, 4. Please do #9 first so that you can check your answers and learn. Also, be sure to read and work through all 3 example problems in the textbook reading.

F 12/7/012

HW due: Revisit yesterday’s assignment. Make a sincere effort to work through the difficulties in #9, and then tackle #4. Keep a time log and, if you get stuck, a list of specific questions. “I don’t understand how to start” is not a specific question. “I don’t understand what the letter _____ stands for in this context” is specific.

M 12/10/012

HW due: Read §7-4; write §7-3 #4, 9, 10. Make sure #4 and #9 are finally in a good state.

T 12/11/012

HW due: Write §7-4 #2, 4. Dot paper is not required; feel free to make a simple approximate lattice on your regular filler paper. Also, make sure that problems 4, 9, and 10 from §7-3 are finally complete. Correct answers are expected.

W 12/12/012

HW due: Write §7-4 #4 (Note: The answer given in class for the equation of the ridge line was wrong), 5, 7, and review problems R1 and R3abcde on pp. 341-342.

Th 12/13/012

Test through Chapter 7 (100 pts.), omitting §7-5 and §7-6.

F 12/14/012

HW due: Write out all questions (1-10) from yesterday’s test. You may use any text or static online resources you wish. Face-to-face chat, electronic communication, or phone conversation with any living human is prohibited. (That means no friends, tutors, teachers, parents, etc., whether live or online. No e-mail, IM, text messaging, or postings are permitted.)

M 12/17/012

HW due: Read §7-5 and learn the tabular format on p. 335, “cold.” In other words, you should be able to reproduce it without notes. Make the following changes as you are learning it:

1. In the slope column, mark slope = dy/dx.
2. In the dy column, mark dy = slope · dx.
3. Add a fifth column, marked new y = old y + dy.

T 12/18/012

HW due:

1. Consider the diff. eq. we were working with yesterday, namely dy/dx = xy with initial condition (2, 1).

(a) With dx = 1, compare the estimate we obtained for y(4), namely 12, with the correct solution obtained by separating the variables and solving.

(b) Explain the direction of the error observed in part (a).

(c) Repeat Euler’s Method using dx = 0.5 and then dx = 0.25 to obtain alternate estimates for y(4).

(d) Does the additional accuracy obtained in part (c) justify the additional work required? Write a short paragraph.

Christmas break.
