No additional HW will be collected. However, please answer the question posed in class: How large a sample do we need for two independent SRS’s of voters so that a 2-percentage-point change in candidate approval ratings is statistically significant in the two-sided sense?

Chapter 12 will be covered in class by means of in-class worksheet(s), with reading optional.

Original due date for Project #4 and Quiz on Darrell Huff's How to Lie With Statistics. This date applies unless you passed the spot check on Monday 4/2.

The quiz will take about 5 minutes and will occur right at the beginning of class. Everyone else will work on the sample test #12B that was distributed in class Wednesday 4/4. Note: Although you are not required to work on the sample test before class today, you are encouraged to read through the problems and start planning your strategies.

HW due today: Visit www.collegeboard.org/ap/library/cd_00-01.html and request a printout of pp.15-21 of the AP Statistics course description. (Don’t kill trees by printing the entire voluminous document.) Your printout will be a formula sheet that you can mark up in class. Although the page numbers printed at the bottom of each page will be 13-19, you should request 15-21 when sending the job to the printer.

F 4/6/01

HW due today: Remaining problems from sample test #12B. These will not be collected, but you should do as many of the problems as possible so that we can compare answers.

M 4/9/01

Extended due date for Project #4 and Quiz on Darrell Huff's How to Lie With Statistics. If you miss the quiz today for any reason, even an excused absence, you will have the option of an oral quiz or a slightly more difficult version of the written quiz. In order to qualify for this extended due date, you must have passed the spot check on Monday 4/2.

If you have time, continue working on the problems from sample test #12B.

* HW due today: Chapter 12, problems #12.35 through 12.39 all. For at least two of these (your choice), use full VHA(S)TPC writeups; you may do the other three as "button pushers."

For the homework due today and for all succeeding days in which you see an asterisk (*) before the homework assignment, you are encouraged to substitute up to 20 minutes of review in the Barron’s AP review book for your normal 45 minutes of expected homework. That means you may do fewer than the assigned number of problems, provided you can document your AP study in writing. There is a standard spreadsheet grid available for this purpose. I also have many review problems on handy index cards for your convenience. Please see me to check out a deck of cards and/or a study grid.

In class: Review for test and begin discussing Chapter 13.

If you were not in class, or if you lost your formula sheet, please take one from my office door or print out a fresh one (pp.13-19 from the AP Statistics Course Description, but request pp.15-21 when sending to printer).

Quiz on §§14.1 and 14.3. This will be multiple-choice and short answer so that you can get your results quickly. (Send me an e-mail over the weekend if you are eager to learn how you did. Anyone with a semester average of B or above after taking this quiz is exempt from taking a final exam during the week of May 21.)

Your lowest quiz for the quarter will be dropped.

Messrs. Eby, Ferrer, Goldberg, Harutunian, and Pachner should take this quiz on the honor system and bring it to school early Tuesday morning for grading. Time limit is 18 minutes after you have punched the data into your calculator.
