STAtistics Monthly Schedule

(AP Statistics, Periods D and F)

Th 3/1/01

HW due today: Read §10.4.

F 3/2/01

HW due today: Read §10.4 a second time. This is, in my experience, the hardest section of the entire textbook. Luckily, you are not required to compute "power" on the AP exam. However, you are required to understand what it means, to describe what makes it grow or shrink, and to estimate it. For Tuesday's test, only the sketchy outline of power as "1 minus P(Type II error for a specific alternative)" will be tested.

Note: Today is the last day to request an extension for Group Project #3. Extension requests must be made in writing and will be valid for a day or two.

M 3/5/01

HW due: Group Project #3 final report. Extensions of a day or two will be granted if requested in writing at least 72 hours in advance.

In class: Review for test. The February 1999 test makes a fairly good practice test, except that tomorrow you will see more questions about Type I and Type II errors and no questions at all concerning nonparametric procedures, t distributions, or the use of s (sample s.d.) in hypothesis testing. Most of the questions in old tests #4D, #4F, and #6D are also fair game. There is a complete sample test with answer key that you will want to check out, too, although some of the questions go beyond what we have studied so far.

T 3/6/01

Test on Chapters 9 and 10. You will be required to know how to check assumptions, construct C.I.'s, perform significance tests, report conclusions using AP approved wording, and define the salient terms (sampling distribution, sample proportion, s.e., null hypothesis, confidence level, confidence interval, Type I error, Type II error, etc.), but the concept of power will be covered only at a sketchy level for now.

Th 3/8/01

HW due today: Read §11.1.

F 3/9/01

End of third quarter. HW due today: Reread §11.1 and work problem #11.8 on p.597. We will have either a HW check or a HW quiz.

M 3/12/01

HW due today: Read §11.2. You may omit the optional portions (pp.633-638).

T 3/13/01

HW due today: Reread §11.2 if necessary and write any three of the following problems (your choice): #11.46, #11.48, #11.50, #11.51, #11.52.

W 3/14/01

Day of Rest (STAtistics and HappyCal only). Third quarter grades are now ready.

Th 3/15/01

No new HW due today. Make sure you are caught up on the HW originally assigned for Tuesday 3/13. Those who scored below 70% (after adjustment) on the March 6 test must show me their test corrections before Spring Break begins. Corrections are optional (extra credit) for everyone else.

F 3/16/01

Last day of class before Spring Break. Guest speaker: Mr. Mark Mills, technology forecaster.

Also today: Discussion of Project #4, which is due on Thursday, April 5.

Sun 3/18/01

Assignments posted for partners in Project #4.

M 3/19/01

No school (Spring Break).
