STAtistics Monthly Schedule
(AP Statistics, Periods D and F)
M 10/2/00 |
HW due today: Proposal and milestones for Project #1 (Exploratory Data Analysis). |
T 10/3/00 |
HW due today: None (in recognition of both classes' good performance on the first test)! However, please resume reading in the textbook. Your goal by start of class on Wednesday should be p.188. |
W 10/4/00 |
HW due today: Finish the quiz that was distributed Tuesday 10/3. |
Th 10/5/00 |
HW due today: Before class, read through p.188. We will work on the space shuttle regression extrapolation problem in class. Special visitor: Woody. |
F 10/6/00 |
HW due today: Prepare as much of problem #4.2 as you can. The additional data you need (for the debt at the end of FY97, FY98, FY99, and FY00) is at http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/opd/opdpenny.htm, which is much more useful than the sites listed on p.190 of your textbook. During class, we will work on discussion questions regarding SAT correlation statistics. |
M 10/9/00 |
No class. |
T 10/10/00 |
No class. |
W 10/11/00 |
Optional class; review session for Big Quiz. D period will meet in Room S as usual. Although this class session is optional, your absence will be a strike against you if you do poorly on the Big Quiz. If you have an unavoidable absence such as a college trip or college meeting, you should be emailing me over the long weekend to clear up your islands of uncertainty. |
Th 10/12/00 |
Big Quiz (60 points, not droppable) covering pp.128-188 plus the box on p.207. Make sure you are up to date on the reading, since there may be questions on material that has not been covered in class. |
F 10/13/00 |
Hand in the Big Quiz, or send it by email if you have a planned absence. This quiz will not be accepted late unless you have an emergency such as an illness that is cleared with Mrs. Selinger’s office. |
M 10/16/00 |
Essay due today: Answer the question, "What is the aim of schooling?" In other words, what is the underlying goal behind attending school? A minimum of one (1) well-thought-out complete sentence is required. You may wish to write a paragraph or so to explain yourself.
"To prepare for life" is, of course, true, but much too vague to be informative. After all, the Wendy’s hamburger I ate last night prepared me for life in the sense that it nourished me so that I could go on with the rest of my life. Not good enough! F period note: No bowl-shaped responses will be accepted. |
T 10/17/00 |
HW due today: Finish the linear regression handout and read pp. 190-195 in text. |
W 10/18/00 |
No additional HW due today. Be thoroughly familiar with the reading on pp. 190-195 (power regression). In class, finish up discussion questions regarding SAT correlation statistics. |
Th 10/19/00 |
HW due today: #4.4 on p.196. Reading goal: through p.215. |
F 10/20/00 |
Read through p.215 before class today (required). Possible mini-quiz on causation, common response, and confounding. |
M 10/23/00 |
Reading goal: through p.231. Remember that there is HW due tomorrow. |
T 10/24/00 |
Read through p.231 before class today (required). HW due today: #4.43, 4.44, 4.50, 4.62, 4.66. |
W 10/25/00 |
Review for test. Suggested review materials include Mr. Hansen’s fill-in study guide (as discussed in class, omitting #42-45 and #51-56), Eric Love’s study guide (omitting terms such as "blind" and "blocking" that have not been covered yet), the textbook’s section summaries and chapter summaries, the Judge Jeremy problem, the HDGTCF and its answer key, the Big Quiz with its answer key, and the discussion questions regarding SAT correlation statistics. The solution key for problems #4.62 and #4.66 is also available now. You are also expected to know the following items from the 20-year curriculum:
Th 10/26/00 |
Test on Chapters 3 and 4. If you wish to compute and justify a 7th-degree power fit (note: this is not a general PwrReg) to the data stored in your calculator, showing all f and f –1 algebra, please do so and turn in your answer on Friday, 10/27. Also, extra-time people and anyone who wants to revisit problems from the latter portion of today's test may work on this overnight and turn it in on Friday, 10/27. |
F 10/27/00 |
Optional HW due: 7th-degree power fit from yesterday's test, plus other problems if appropriate. If you are fairly sure that you had #19 correct on the in-class test, you need not turn in another paper. In class: Form groups for Project #2 (Survey). |
M 10/30/00 |
Day of Rest (no class). However, remember that your survey proposal is due tomorrow. |
T 10/31/00 |
HW due at start of class (so that you can get immediate feedback): Group proposal for Project #2 (Survey). If your group leader drops the ball, you can shield yourself against a zero on this assignment by turning one in for yourself. However, there is no need to do this if your group is diligent and submits a proposal today. If the group leader is sick, out of town, or otherwise indisposed today, the proposal is still due, since the group leader should deputize someone else in the group. |
